Peterborough Cathedral

What to do and where to stay in Peterborough

Peterborough Cathedral

Founded by King Peada in 655AD this Cathedral has had a catalogue of tragic events down the ages. It was destroyed in 870 by the Danes, rebuilt then burned down in 1116 in an accidental fire. Rebuilt again to its present form between 1118 and 1238.

In the Civil war it suffered significant damage by Cromwell's men and is home to the graves of Mary Queen of Scots and Katherine of Aragon. Despite all of this Peterborough Cathedral still stands and is one of the finest churches in England.
